VDSL Solutions from DrayTek

High speed VDSL2+ has been introduced in Australia and New Zealand over the past few years. VDSL stands for Very High Speed Digital Subscriber Line and is much faster than ADSL. Although it is available throughout New Zealand, it is not widely available in Australia yet. VDSL2+ is expected to become one of the main alternatives for the aging ADSL2+ connections.

VDSL2+ is deployed over ordinary phone lines similarly to ADSL. It offers much greater speeds with a theoretical maximum download speed of 250Mbps at the source to 100Mbps at a distance or 0.5km and 50Mbps at 1km from the exchange. The download speed becomes comparable to ADSL2+ speeds at 1.6km from the exchange. Due to its distance limitation, VDSL2 will suit those installations that are closer than 1.6km from the exchange. Its use will be ideal for Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the basement (FTTB). Especially in older high rise apartment buildings, it will be very difficult to run optic fibre to every apartment in the building. The solution here is to run Fibre to the basement and then utilise existing phone cabling to each unit to provide a high speed VDSL2+ connection for all the tenants. For this scenario appropriate VDSL2+DSLAM equipment will need to be installed in the basement of the building and a VDSL router installed in each unit connected to the phone cabling.

The increased bandwidth offered by VDSL means that high quality video, such as HDTV from the Internet will be possible.

DrayTek has a range of VDSL2+ routers to suit a range of customer requirements. These range from the low cost Vigor130 router up to the single WAN Vigor2760 router and the business grade triple WAN Vigor2860 series router. Each of these router models are backward compatible to ADSL2+. This means that they can be used on existing ADSL2+ connections today and in the future, when VDSL2 becomes available in your area you do not need to purchase a new router, but simply connect your VDSL router to the new connection. I will now give you a brief overview of the DrayTek VDSL router range.


The Vigor130 is a single port  IPv6 ready compact VDSL2 router with ADSL2/2+ fall back suitable for both SOHO and residential broadband Internet access. It  is backward compatible with the existing ADSL lines if VDSL2 infrastructure is not yet available in your area. The Vigor130 can also be used as a VDSL bridge modem to interface broadband routers equipped with an Ethernet WAN interface to VDSL2.

The Vigor2760 series VDSL2/ADSL2+ routers are suitable for both SOHO and residential broadband Internet access. It is also backward compatible with the existing ADSL lines if VDSL2 infrastructure is not yet available in your area.

Three models are available. These are: the base model Vigor2760, The Wi-Fi model Vigor2760n and the VOIP and Wi-Fi model Vigor2760Vn.   There routers are IPv6 Ready for future network and higher-speed WAN throughput, the high definition multi-media streaming is available for home entertainment and digital learning.

The embedded VoIP and VPN connections can allow family members to utilize ultimate broadband performance to realize home office.

Some of The key hardware features of Vigor2860 include

Triple WAN which includes a combined ADSL2+ and VDSL2+ interface, a Gigabit Ethernet WAN interface and a 3G or 4G connection via the USB port. These can be configured in load balance mode to provide increased Internet bandwidth or can be configured in failover mode. For example the USB 3G connection can be used as a failover connection when the primary ADSL connection goes down, thus providing high Internet availability.

The six Gigabit LAN ports can be assigned to one of 4 VLANs utilising multiple IP subnets.

Three versions are available. These are the base model Vigor2860, the Wi-Fi model Vigor2860n and VOIP and Wi-Fi model Vigor2860Vn.

The Vigor2860n router has a built in wireless access point. It has two detachable external antennas and provides 802.11n Wi-Fi with a throughput of 300Mbps.

The Vigor2860Vn includes both the built in wireless access point and Voice over IP circuitry. It includes all the standard PBX functions in DrayTek VOIP routers.
