An in-depth look at DrayTek VigorAP series
Wi-Fi technology, which has a strong Australian influence through CSIRO, plays a major role in networking of numerous devices including desktops, laptops, tablets, mobile phones, IP surveillance camera, etc. It allows the devices to communicate with each other over hundreds of metres, and provides Internet access as well as LAN networking. As the demands increase for this type of solutions DrayTek introduces the VigorAP 800 and VigorAP 900 which are part of DrayTek’s VigorAP series.
DrayTek VigorAP series is an enterprise level High Speed Dual WAN access point featuring dual band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), 5 x Gigabit LAN ports, 802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE), USB connectivity to share a network printer, plus a whole set of security and management functions designed for modern day organizations.
WAN & LAN
Using DrayTek’s VigorAP series, users can now easily connect a WAN outlet from a router with xDSL or 3G/4G mobile internet access to other devices and locations. The VigorAP900 supports concurrent dual band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) that minimises wireless interference and double the effective bandwidth. The 5x Gigabit LAN ports allow high speed traffic among the devices through CAT5/6 network cables. The Power over Ethernet (PoE) feature allows mounting without the need for any power point at the vicinity – an important feature because the Wi-Fi devices such as the WAP tend to be mounted in strategic locations where the Wi-Fi signal can be stronger for the target devices, and where power points tend not to be present. These features make the VigorAP series versatile and easy to configure and manage.
A typical WAP (Wireless Access Point) has an Ethernet WAN port and 1 or 2 LAN ports, a single band (2.4GHz or 5GHz) with 4 SSIDs and some basic security protocols. This will be sufficient if the user lives in an isolated location with minimum interference and network usage is mainly for personal or home based applications.
DrayTek’s VigorAP series, on the other hand, is equipped with dual band capability and with 4 x SSIDs for each band (VigorAP900), effectively doubling up the traffic capacity and the number of user groups. Moreover, it is equipped with 5 x Gigabit LAN ports ensuring that the users’ data network traffic can be easily catered for. There are also 2 VLAN groups allowing you to define network accessibility for 2 Wi-Fi user groups, e.g. staff and guests.
Other convenient and important features include: MIMO technology for enhanced coverage, TR-069 remote access, WMM-QoS, Wireless Isolation, security protocols (WEP/WPA/WPA2), PoE capability for easy installation, etc. In addition, VigorAP800/900 includes a DHCP server as well as an internal RADIUS server to control network access without the need to set up a dedicated server.Coupled with the network management and security features of TR-069, VLAN, WMM-QoS, Wireless Isolation, secure access protocols, DHCP, Radius server, etc., VigorAP series is truly unique and innovative.
Many of the buyers of VigorAP800/900 report that they are able to deploy VigorAP800/900 easily, with the PoE technology, at locations that were previously difficult to mount. The concurrent dual band capability of the VigorAP900 allows the users to double the data throughput and have minimum interference.Network administrators typically make use of the network management features, such as TR-069 remote access for remote configuring, or VLAN settings to split user groups so each can have its own access mode.
VigorAP800/900 is equipped AP Management that can interwork with other Vigor Routers to manage a number of WAPs to gain more productivity and efficiency. IT administrators can review connection status remotely (e.g. from a Network Centre) through a Vigor router’s configuration screen and configure the VigorAP800/900 for encryption rules, MAC address control, or upload/download firmware remotely.
One high profile case for VigorAP is an In-Room Solution, which has been deployed in many luxurious hotels in UAE (Dubai), India and China. This solution combines Apple’s iPAD and VigorAP series, and allows guests of each hotel room to control lighting, air conditioning, TV, sound system, in-room service calls, and to browse Internet and read over 1500 publications from 90 countries and 55 languages.
