Not to be confused with 5Ghz Wi-Fi, the 5G (Fifth Generation) wireless data network is a fast growing and speedy wireless Internet and mobile phone connection. It is an advancement to the previous 4G or LTE (Long-Term Evolution) and 3G connections. It comes in three versions:
Millimetre wave. This uses a higher frequency than previous mobile phone networks and can theoretically reach speeds exceeding one gigabit per second, which is up to ten times faster than current 4G technology. However, it comes with a downside. That tiny one millimetre wave has more difficulty penetrating walls and other obstructions and has a range of just 100-200 metres. This means a lot more broadcast towers are needed, so usage will likely only be found in large public areas like airports and arenas. That brings us to:

Mid-Band. Uses a lower frequency than millimetre wave, so it has a larger range and better object penetration, with speeds up to 400 megabits per second. That is still substantially faster than 4G, but with a smaller range.

Low-Band. This has a similar range to 4G and still offers faster speeds than 4G but not a lot faster – 100-200Mbps.

One ideal application of either the Vigor2865Lax-5G and 2927Lax-5G routers is to provide internet access for passengers on public transport such as tourist buses or coaches. For the transport company to provide free Wi-Fi access for its passengers, the wireless router can be placed in a suitable location on the bus to provide good Wi-Fi coverage throughout. On larger buses or double decker buses, a Wi-Fi access point such as the VigorAP 903 can be installed to extend the Wi-Fi coverage.

The passengers can be given unrestricted access to the internet, or the User Management feature in the router can be used to issue usernames and passwords to prevent unauthorised users outside the bus from getting free internet access. In addition, users can be directed to the company web portal for information on the services. Other security measures that can be implemented are the firewall and Content Security Management (CSM) features to protect users from undesirable website content (e.g. for underage passengers).

A range of leisure and social activities such as sports events, weekend markets or special functions, require short term internet access. At most such outdoor locations, there is no fixed cabling to provide ADSL, VDSL or NBN services, and the only way to provide internet access is to use wireless broadband. The Vigor2865Lax-5G and 2927Lax-5G routers can be set up quickly to provide internet access for these events.

The user management, web portal and firewall/CSM features can be used to enhance the operations. The Wi-Fi hotspot feature can also be used, where users connect to the Wi-Fi network using their social media accounts such as Facebook or Google login, to monitor who is using the service.

Mobile offices for businesses or projects may be at temporary sites without permanent internet access facilities. The Vigor2865Lax-5G and 2927Lax-5G routers can provide internet access for these mobile offices.

For inter-office communication needs, VPN connections can be established over the 5G network to share network resources such as files and servers. To protect the network, DrayTek routers feature an Object-oriented SPI Firewall, DoS defense, CSM (Content Security Management) and URL Reputation (Web Content Filtering) as required. Additionally, the VLAN feature allows up to 16 workgroups to be set up to add further security and to provide different levels of network access based on the workgroup.

Vigor2865L-5G, Vigor2927L-5G series routers require a 12–15V DC power supply. Therefore when used in vehicles such as busses or trucks which have a 24V supply, you will need to use a DC to DC converter to produce 12VDC regulated output. These converters are available from electronic suppliers. They plug into the cigarette lighter socket in your bus or truck and have an output socket that plugs into the router.

It is recommended to also use the DC to DC converter when the router is used in a motor vehicle to ensure a constant voltage to the router. Although a 13.8 volt car battery output is still within the router’s power supply requirements, the voltage may fluctuate to outside the router’s requirements.
