I just bought a Vigor Router and I can't connect to the Internet. What should I do?

 

If you are having trouble connecting to the internet, the first reference should be the Quick Start Guide (QSG) that came with the router. The QSG explains how to connect the router to the Internet within minutes. However, if you still have difficulties, refer to the details below:

Step 1: Check the Physical Connections:

  • Power adapter is firmly plugged into router.
  • ADSL line connected to ADSL port on router (if the router has a modem inside)
  • ADSL modem plugs into WAN port on router (if you have a separate modem)
  • Ethernet cable plugged from PC network card to one of LAN ports on the router.

You should notice:

  • ACT LED (light) flashing
  • DSL LED(light)is solid, it means ADSL sync is up
  • WLAN LED on, if the router has wireless functionality.
  • LANx LED on, where x is the LAN port number on the router.

Step 2: Check the PC Network Connection:

On your computer go to the “DOS command prompt” and enter the command “ipconfig” and check that the PC has obtained a valid IP address from the router. If not, check the physical connections again. draytek-router-connection-problem-step3

Step 3: Accessing the router Web Interface
  1. On your computer, start up a web browser.
  2. Enter 192.168.1.1 into the address bar of the web browser
  3. The router login page will now appear. Enter the router username and password. The default username and password is:

Step 4: Configuring the “Internet Access Setup” on the router

After you have logged in, you will be in the router’s Main Menu. The layout will depend on the router model. In this document, we will go through the most common configuration options. draytek-router-connection-problem-step5 For the instructions below you will need to know:

  • ISP account username and password
  • Internet Access Mode – PPPoE/PPPoA, Static or Dynamic IP, MPoA
  • DSL Modem settings (if applicable)

This information should be provided by your ISP. draytek-router-connection-problem-step6 Go to Internet Access Setup >> PPPoE/PPPoA configuration menu. Enter in the following details:

  • Select Enable option
  • Enter DSL modem settings as specified by your ISP. Default settings will work most of the time.
  • Enter the ISP account details in the ISP Access Setup box. Ensure that ‘space’ characters are not included at the beginning or end of the username/password. Also, username and passwords are CASE SENSITIVE.
  • Click OK to save settings.

draytek-router-connection-problem-step7 Broadband Routers Using an External Modem for ADSL Connection draytek-router-connection-problem-step8 Go to WAN >> Internet Access >> PPPoE/PPPoA configuration menu. Enter in the following details:

  • PPPoE client enable
  • Enter the ISP account details in the ISP Access Setup box. Ensure that ‘space’ characters are not included at the beginning or end of the username/password. Also, username and passwords are CASE SENSITIVE.
  • Click OK to save settings.

Step 5: Checking the Router Online Status

Go to Online Status >> Physical Connection menu. If ADSL connection has been established, the router should have obtained an IP address from the ISP. This will be under WAN 1 Status. draytek-router-connection-problem-step10 Note:

  • Under WAN status, the mode should be either PPPoE, PPPoA, DHCP Client etc.
  • Under WAN status, the uptime value should refresh every 5.5 seconds as it increases.
  • Under ADSL status, the state should be “Showtime”.

Once you have successfully been connected to the Internet, you can visit web pages, send email etc. However, if the Internet connection is unsuccessful refer to the checklist below:

  • Under the WAN status, if there is an “PPPoE: username or password error” then check that you have entered in the correct username and password in the Internet Access Setup screen, as specified under section Step 4 of this FAQ.
  • Under the WAN status, if there is three red dashes “—“, or if you are receiving the “PPPoE: No response from server side” message, then you may need to upgrade the firmware on the router.
Step 6: Troubleshooting Guidelines

If you encounter problems during the setup process, then try the following tips:

  • Upgrade the router firmware. Note that you will need to gain internet access from another location, download the necessary firmware files from the Draytek Downloads Section, store them on a storage device (e.g. USB drive) and then copy them to your PC.
  • Reset the router and start again.
