Why SD-WAN

  1. VigorACS 3 monitors Internet-based applications (VoIP, video conferencing, media streaming, web browsing, etc.), and displays usage and performance data (latency, loss, jitter, Mean Opinion Score (MOS) given by the users, call history, etc.).
  2. Network administrators can refer to these data, and set SD-WAN  policies to ensure traffic for the selected applications (e.g. VoIP) to be routed through the best quality interfaces.

An example of SaaS and Cloud applications from HQ with VigorACS 3

  1. User experience will be optimized with the SD-WAN policies, in addition to Load Balance, Failover, and Route Policy functions.
  2. The SD-WAN policies can be applied to routers at the headquarter or branches (i.e. edge routers), ensuring efficient use of router capacities under the network conditions.
  3. VigorACS 3 complements the MPLS protocol for HQ-branch traffic, and provides flexibility for SaaS and cloud-based applications that are becoming more common in recent networks. In a way, it plays a role like an orchestrator (i.e., an arranger for a piece of music).

Auto VPN

DrayTek’s SD-WAN solution provides the easiest way to set up VPN tunnels from scratch.

Hint: If a LAN subnet conflict occurs between routers, VigorACS 3 will also design and suggest new LAN subnets. All you need to do is approve the new LAN settings and the rest will be taken care of.

Interface Quality At a Glance

Interface MOS

Wired WAN, Wireless WAN (including wireless 2.4GHz/5GHz WAN, LTE WAN, and USB WAN), and VPN quality are monitored 24/7.

With “Average” MOS (Mean Opinion Score), Network Administrators can view the stability and quality of the WAN over the previous 24 hours.

“Active” WAN Quality, on the other hand, shows the current interface quality.

MOS Compliancy

This shows the reliability of the connections as a percentage. Ideally connections should always be higher than the target MOS threshold.

Interface Quality From Macro to Micro

For every Interface on every CPE (Customer Premises Equipment)

Anytime suspicious Interface quality is spotted on the Dashboard, Network Administrators can easily dive into the details.

For each Interface on each CPE, Data usage, latency, Jitter, and Packet Loss are recorded.

Intelligent VoIP Optimisation

From the start of each VoIP call to the end, SD-WAN provides intelligent VoIP optimisation.

Auto VoIP WAN

SD-WAN intelligently assigns the best-quality WAN for VoIP traffic. Whenever a new call is made, SD-WAN makes sure it is going out over the best WAN available.

VoIP Live Failover

SD-WAN keeps monitoring each live call, and will failover to the secondary VoIP WAN if poor call quality is detected. Every call is logged with a Mean Opinion Score along with the Interface used.

Full Traffic Control with SD-WAN Route Policy

Application/Domain Route Policy

SD-WAN provides complete routing control by allowing Network Admins to specify the desired route for selected applications/domains to make sure the specific routing scenarios can be accomplished.

Failover/Failback

Failover to another interface when the original interface is offline, and failback when possible.

Application Route Policy

Full Control of NAT and Routing

The matched sessions can be NATed or Routed, all under your control. This is especially useful if you need private/MPLS WAN (routed) and direct Internet access (NATed) at the same time.

In the following scenario, by creating 2 policies to different destinations, VoIP (SIP/RTP) from an IP phone in the branch office can be routed via the MPLS WAN when calling an IP phone at HQ, and NATed via the 2nd WAN when the call needs to go to the Internet directly.

Components and Topology

Edge Routers Providing Edge Computing

  • Edge routers are physical routers installed in HQ and Branches.
  • Router models selection for different WAN types, including DSL and LTE.
  • Establishing VPN tunnels (IPSec by default) from branches to HQ to form Hub-n-Spoke or Mesh topology.
  • Receiving SD-WAN configurations from VigorACS 3, performing edge computing according to SD-WAN policies, and uploading data to VigorACS3 for monitoring.

VigorACS 3 Server as Orchestrator

  • VigorACS 3 is the central software where network administrators perform configurations, provisioning, and monitoring activity.
  • Multitenant capability makes xSP services easy.
