Enhancing Network Reliability with VRRP on DrayTek Routers

The benefits of VRRP include:

• Uninterrupted Service: Automatic failover eliminates the need for manual intervention.
• Increased Resilience: Higher uptime for critical business infrastructure
• Hardware Flexibility: You are not required to use identical routers. For instance, a high-performance Vigor3912 can serve as your primary master, while a more budget-friendly Vigor2865 acts as the standby backup.

• Cross-Brand Support: VRRP is a standard protocol that allows you to use other VRRP-compatible brands as backups if needed.

The process uses a Virtual IP Address shared between both routers. Network clients set this Virtual IP as their default gateway. If the Master router goes offline, the Standby router assumes the Virtual IP and manages traffic without interruption. Devices communicate through this shared virtual IP, ensuring seamless failover.

1. 1. Access the web interface of both routers.

1. 1. Ensure Unique LAN IP Addresses: Assign distinct IP addresses for each router within the same subnet. For example, the backup router could be set to 192.168.1.1 and the master router to 192.168.1.199.
   2. Enable VRRP: Navigate to the Applications > High Availability menu, select VRRP from the dropdown menu, and enable High Availability.

         2. Enter a Virtual Router Identifier (this must match on all routers in the virtual router group).
         3. Choose the VRRP version (either version 2 or 3).
         4. Set a Priority Value (between 1 and 254)—the router with the highest priority becomes the master.
         5. If needed, enable Preempt to allow high-priority routers to reclaim the master role.
         6. Set an Authentication Key (using a password for this example).
         7. Specify the advertisement interval for messages from the master router.
         8. Choose the management interface and enter the virtual IP address to use as the default gateway for local network hosts (e.g., 192.168.1.254).
      2. Replicate Settings on the Backup Router:

   Repeat the configuration process on the backup router from step 4, but set a lower priority value, such as 100.

• Check the Basics: Verify that the Virtual Router ID (VRID) and Virtual IP addresses match exactly on both units.
